Photographing the “’Til Death Do Us Part” murder mystery luncheon at Sugar Hollow Crossing on October 6, 2026, was a reminder of just how much creativity, collaboration, and hard work go into bringing a wedding experience to life.
There is something special about being in a room full of people who genuinely love what they do. People who spend hours planning, designing, creating, coordinating, and perfecting details that most guests may never even realize took so much work.
On October 6, 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph the KC Wedding Guild luncheon presented by Kansas City Engaged at Sugar Hollow Crossing in Sugar Creek, Missouri. The theme was “’Til Death Do Us Part,” a spooky, wedding-inspired murder mystery that brought together an incredibly talented group of Kansas City wedding professionals for an afternoon of creativity, networking, and a little Halloween fun.
As a Kansas City wedding photographer, I walked away from this experience with more than a beautiful gallery. I walked away with an even deeper appreciation for this industry, the people who make it what it is, and the privilege of getting to do what I love for a living.
And honestly? It made me even more excited for the weddings still to come.
What Happens Behind the Scenes of a Kansas City Wedding?
One of the things I have grown to appreciate most as a photographer is that I get to see so much more than the final result.
I see the finished tablescapes, the carefully chosen florals, the perfectly placed details, and the way a room comes together. But I also see the work that happens before anyone walks through the door.
I see vendors arriving early, hauling equipment, setting up installations, adjusting details, solving problems, and working together to make sure everything comes together the way it was envisioned. I see the little decisions that make a design feel cohesive and the countless details that require time, experience, and a whole lot of patience.
That perspective changes the way you look at an event.
A beautiful wedding is never just a beautiful wedding. It is the result of many people bringing different skills, ideas, and creative visions to the same table.
As a photographer, I have the privilege of documenting the finished product while also witnessing pieces of the process. I get to watch the transformation from an empty space to a thoughtfully designed experience, and then capture the moments that unfold once everyone arrives.
The KC Wedding Guild luncheon was such a great reminder of that.
Every detail had a purpose. Every creative had a role. And every person involved contributed something that made the experience what it was.
The photos may be what people remember seeing, but the teamwork behind them is what makes the whole experience possible.
What Are Kansas City Engaged and the KC Wedding Guild?
If you are planning a wedding in Kansas City, you may have come across Kansas City Engaged while searching for inspiration, wedding vendors, or local wedding shows.
Kansas City Engaged is a wedding resource that connects engaged couples with wedding professionals and helps them navigate the process of planning their celebrations. Through wedding shows, resources, and industry events, it helps bring couples and local creatives together.
The KC Wedding Guild is the professional community sponsored by Kansas City Engaged. It creates opportunities for wedding professionals to connect, network, learn from one another, and find inspiration through regular gatherings and luncheons.
In other words, Kansas City Engaged helps connect couples with the wedding industry, while the Wedding Guild gives the professionals behind that industry a place to connect with one another.
And that connection matters.
Wedding days require collaboration between people who may not have worked together before. Planners, photographers, florists, venues, caterers, rental companies, beauty professionals, stationers, entertainment teams, and so many others all contribute to the experience.
Creating opportunities for those people to meet, share ideas, and build relationships makes the industry stronger.
The October luncheon was a perfect example of that mission in action. Instead of simply gathering to talk about weddings, the Guild brought an incredible collection of talent into one room and gave everyone the opportunity to experience what can happen when creativity and collaboration come together.
I am grateful to have been there with my camera, documenting it.
“’Til Death Do Us Part”: A Spooky Wedding Inspiration Experience
October was the perfect month for a murder mystery luncheon, and the “’Til Death Do Us Part” theme was such a fun way to bring wedding inspiration and Halloween together.
Hosted at Sugar Hollow Crossing, the event brought a playful, theatrical twist to the wedding industry gathering. It was a reminder that weddings do not have to follow one formula and that creativity can take so many different directions.
Some couples envision romantic outdoor ceremonies, soft florals, and golden-hour portraits. Others want candlelit receptions, dramatic colors, unconventional details, or an experience their guests will talk about for years.
I love that about weddings.
There is room for so many different styles, personalities, and ideas. As photographers, we get to work with couples who see their wedding day differently, and it is our job to understand their vision and find ways to tell their story honestly.
This luncheon celebrated that same creative freedom in its own unique way.
From the atmosphere to the details and the people who brought the concept to life, there was so much to photograph. It was the kind of event that reminds you to keep looking, keep noticing, and never assume you have already seen everything worth capturing.
Sugar Hollow Crossing: A Beautiful Setting for Gathering
Located in Sugar Creek, Missouri, just outside Kansas City, Sugar Hollow Crossing provided the setting for this unforgettable afternoon.
There is something I love about venues that offer character and a sense of place. A venue does not have to look like every other wedding venue to be beautiful. In fact, I think some of the most memorable photographs happen when a space has its own personality.
As a photographer, I am always looking at how a location can be used creatively. I notice the way light falls across a room, the textures that add depth to an image, the angles that create a more interesting composition, and the little pockets of a venue that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Kansas City and the surrounding Missouri and Kansas areas offer so many opportunities for this kind of creativity.
Historic properties, open fields, wooded venues, elegant reception spaces, downtown architecture, and intimate outdoor settings all provide something different. I could photograph weddings in this region for years and still find new ways to approach a location.
That is one of the things that keeps me excited about this work. There is always another story to tell and another way to see something familiar.
Thank you to Sugar Hollow Crossing for hosting this gathering and providing such a memorable setting for the KC Wedding Guild luncheon.
The Vendors Who Brought This Day to Life
One of my favorite things about photographing an event like this is getting to appreciate the individual talents that contribute to the finished experience.
As photographers, we often focus on the way the details look in the final images. But those details represent hours of planning, creativity, preparation, and hands-on work from the people responsible for them.
This luncheon was a beautiful reminder that no one person creates an entire wedding experience alone.
I want to recognize and thank the talented professionals who helped bring “’Til Death Do Us Part” to life.

What Being in a Room Full of Kansas City Wedding Professionals Taught Me
I would be lying if I said walking into a room full of talented wedding professionals did not come with a little pressure.
When you are surrounded by people who have spent years developing their craft, building their businesses, and creating their own signature styles, it makes you think about the work you are putting out into the world.
You want to do your best. You want your photographs to reflect the care you put into your work. You want the people who trusted you to document the event to be proud of the result.
And when so many talented creatives are in the same room, you realize just how many different ways there are to approach the same experience.
One photographer may see a moment through an editorial lens. Another may be drawn to documentary storytelling. One creative might gravitate toward dramatic lighting, while another loves natural light and the quiet moments in between.
There is no single right way to create something beautiful.
I have learned that being a good photographer is not just about knowing your camera or understanding light. It is also about learning to trust your eye, developing your own perspective, staying open to new ideas, and recognizing that your style will continue to grow as you do.
It is about showing up prepared, paying attention, adapting when things change, and remembering that there are real people and real memories behind every image.
And perhaps most importantly, it is about understanding that you cannot please everyone all the time.
In an industry filled with people who care deeply about their work, we all want to deliver something incredible. We want our clients to feel taken care of. We want our collaborators to feel supported. We want the final result to reflect the effort that went into creating it.
We try our hardest because we care.
But we all bring different strengths, personalities, and creative perspectives to the table. Learning to appreciate those differences instead of measuring ourselves against them is something I think every creative can benefit from.
I certainly can.
I Am Not Here to Compete With Other Kansas City Photographers
The Kansas City wedding industry is full of talented photographers and creatives. I have seen so many different approaches to storytelling, editing, posing, lighting, and documenting a wedding day.
And I love that.
I do not look at another photographer's beautiful work and automatically see competition. I see another person who has spent time developing a skill, building a business, and figuring out how they want to tell stories through their camera.
I can admire an editorial image that looks completely different from my own style. I can appreciate dramatic, moody photographs while still loving the bright, natural light that draws me to a scene. I can learn something from another creative without needing to recreate what they do.
There is room for all of it.
What I bring to this industry is my own perspective, my own personality, and the way I approach the people in front of my camera.
I want my couples to feel comfortable being themselves. I want them to laugh, be present, and enjoy their wedding day instead of feeling like they are performing for a camera. I want to create beautiful portraits while also paying attention to the moments they may not even realize are happening.
I care about the details, but I care just as much about the people connected to them.
I want to photograph the planned moments and the unexpected ones. The carefully arranged tables and the happy chaos of the dance floor. The portraits that deserve a place on the wall and the candid photographs that become more meaningful with time.
My goal is not to make every wedding look the same. It is to create a gallery that feels like the people who lived that day.
That is what I want Haley Sparks Photography to be known for: beautiful, heartfelt imagery that preserves both the way a wedding looked and the way it felt.
And I believe there is plenty of room in Kansas City for every photographer who approaches their work with care, integrity, and a genuine love for what they do.
Why I Am Falling More in Love With the Kansas City Wedding Industry
When I think about how much I have grown as a photographer and business owner, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have brought me here.
Every wedding teaches me something. Every session challenges me to see things a little differently. Every event introduces me to people whose work, perspective, or encouragement can leave an impression long after the day is over.
The more I experience this industry, the more I appreciate how much work happens behind the scenes.
There are people coordinating timelines, managing logistics, building installations, preparing meals, styling spaces, arranging flowers, steaming dresses, adjusting lighting, and making countless decisions to keep everything running smoothly.
There are business owners investing in their education, their equipment, their teams, and their craft. There are people showing up early and staying late because they want their clients to have an experience worth remembering.
And there are so many different personalities and creative approaches working together to create one day that means everything to one couple.
That is special.
I think the longer I do this, the more I understand that wedding photography is about so much more than taking pictures. It is about being trusted with memories. It is about working alongside people who care about the same experience from different perspectives. It is about recognizing that every person involved has a part to play in a story that will be remembered for years.
I am proud to be building my place in this community, and I am excited to keep learning from the people who make it what it is.
Kansas City has so much to offer. There are beautiful venues, creative teams, unique locations, and endless opportunities to create photographs that feel fresh and meaningful.
I am just getting started, and I cannot wait to see where this industry takes me next.
The Part of This Job I Will Never Stop Loving
There is a particular feeling I get after photographing a wedding.
I am tired. My feet hurt. My camera cards are full. I am probably already thinking about how many photographs I took and what I cannot wait to see on my computer.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, I am already excited for the next one.
I crave that feeling of walking into a new space and figuring out how to photograph it. I love meeting a couple and learning what matters most to them. I love seeing the details they have spent months planning finally come together.
I love the anticipation before the ceremony, the emotion during the vows, the quiet moments between the big events, and the energy that fills a reception once everyone lets go and celebrates.
No two weddings are the same, even when they take place at the same venue or follow a similar timeline. The people are different. The relationships are different. The little things that make the day meaningful are different.
And that is why I never want to stop paying attention.
I want to keep finding the moments that make a gallery personal. I want to keep improving my craft. I want to keep learning from other creatives and finding new ways to serve the couples who trust me with their memories.
I love what I do, and I do not take it lightly that people invite me into some of the most meaningful days of their lives.
The KC Wedding Guild luncheon reminded me of all of that.
It reminded me that behind every beautiful wedding is a team of people who care. It reminded me that creativity does not have to look the same from one person to the next. And it reminded me that the best part of this industry is not simply the finished photographs or the perfectly styled details.
It is the people.
